The walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali becomes a playful interactive narrative. As  you capture the beauty of the Colosseum and surrounding area with your tablet or smartphone,  you will  receive a short movie clip, related to the photo taken.

Let’s say you take a picture of the “Statue of Caesar”, his “Forum ” or the “Senate”… you might  receive a video clip on Caesar and Cleopatra or on Caesar’s assassination or hear a monologue from the great dictator. These  engaging video clips, based in historical fact, will  open your eyes to the famed love affair between Cleopatra and Caesar, the conversion of Constantine, Trajan’s resurrection and much more…You will even see a virtual reconstruction of the Colosseum as Vespasian intended it!

The art installation is a living visualization of greenhouse gas fluxes from a network of sensing technologies in the UK. The sculpture is based on a scrubber molecule which helps to sequester CO2 out of the air.  The installation is traveling to various National Trust historical sites in 2010.

1080 PUNCHUPS happened at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Futurism movement (event in Los Angeles).

Interaction description:
the system detects movements, speed and positions of the visitors to combine words on the facade. The words are retrieved from a database made out of the 700 words of Futurist Manifesto published in 1909 on Le Figaro.

The Excarnation Machine (BETA) is a participatory game that involves assembling and breathing life into an assortment of hi-tech media representations of the human body, generating a 21st century take on the “exquisite corpse.”  Our project addresses some of the ethical provocations that contemporary science brings to us, such as genetic manipulation and mutation from within and plastic surgery from without.

By representing the human body with MRI’s, X-rays or ultrasounds, we break through the body’s physical boundaries, removing its sense of gravity and turning it into an anti-terrestrial and quasi-ethereal entity.  Thus, in a sense, the body ascends into a cosmic dimension, and yet, at the same time, the antiseptic process of medical imaging causes a qualitative dilution that presents us with a human portraiture that is void of vitality, emotion and warmth.

FIRENZE FUTURA is an interactive video installation.

The contents, about 700 between videos and pictures, were collected through a web page and ads on blogs, newspapers and also word of mouth, begun one month prior the event. The collected material was organized into themes: the city, the river, the parks and the movement (of people) with the intent to tell a story able to depict Florence through its urban elements: the one famous worldwide and traditionally loved by the tourists, but also through monuments and buildings recently built and, even, not yet built and able to suggest a “Florence of the future”.

Inside the Saschall there were 1000 cards divided into the 4 themes, the visitors select a card, drop it into the mailbox built for the event and equipped with sensors able to recognize the cards. Then these contents were projected on the screen of the theater.

This is an interpretation of Adriano Spatola’s Poesia Totale. It’s an interpretation of the relationship between author and audience. It’s a sound zeroglyphic.

We asked twenty people to read a collection of poems by Adriano Spatola and recorded each reading. On the day of the show the interactive installation selected and recombined the audio fragments following the movements of the people who attended the event.
The installation is presented as a sequence of 10 segments, 4minutes for each poem, made of a sound composition and a movie projection of Los Angeles places.

The movie in this page is an example and shows briefly the video projected with the audio produced at the OTIS College of Art and Design during the conference. The rhythm of the fragments is given from the people’s movements around the installation. There is a sensible change when the visitors go in or out of the room, or when they just pass by, and if they stand the sound composition is slower.

The movements of the people is sensed by a webcam with fluXsensi, an open source application software written at MEDIARS and improved over several installation works.
Two laptops were synched over a network, one was capturing the movements, producing the sound composition and projecting the movie clips. The other was projecting the texts of the poems.

In una notte di mezza estate il Castello di Contigliano si anima.

This year Contigliano’s traditional re-enactment of the historic assault on the local castle, which takes place August 4-7, is accompanied by an interactive multimedia installation called II Castello Sensibile.

The installation has been prepared at the Mediars Centre of Interactive Media for Art and Entertainment. The event focuses on interaction between people and public spaces, in this case the historic castle. The colour sequences of the fixtures depend on the flow of visitors: when they enter in the castle the lights will be red, when they leave green and when don’t move blue. The system also estimates the number of people passing through – the more people there are the lighter the colour tone will be.

The decision to use lights did not come about by chance – colours are a language people respond to consciously and subconsciously, giving real emotional experiences. The public becomes an active part of the event by setting the colours and amplifying the castle’s identity.

The installation is created by a group of IT graduates who are members of Mediars: Alvaro Patacchiola, Alessandro Martellucci, Luca Martellucci and Tommy Gentile.

The initiative is funded by the Lazio Regional Government and carried out in collaboration with the Consigliano council. Martellucci and Gentile won scholarships funded by the Rieti Provincial Government and the Fondazione Varrone. The six-month scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year were granted as part of the Quartieri della Memoria (Neighborhoods of Memory) a oral history interactive installation set up by UCLA for the City of Rieti. The oral histories were also collected by communications science graduate Susanna Gnan.

The huge number of visitors who come to Consigliano for the historic re-enactment allowed Mediars to test new mobile-telephone software that enables visitors to access local cultural and tourist information. It is an application in the initial stages of development that could be used regularly in the future at cultural tourism events.
